skirmish: kasper vs calliope

kasper thinks they could cut through the tension in these places like a knife. but they have a job to do, and, so far, there's nobody showing up. it seems like it's going to be a piece of cake.

until it isn't, and someone does show up.

she doesn't seem like she's rocket- or she is and she's either choosing the worst possible path or kasper's just a really bad judge of character. either way, it's enough to cause them to stop- yarrow follows suit, although the sylveon's bristling fur is a much less warm welcome than the nineteen-year old.

"that's as far as you come." to their credit, their voice comes through without shaking- or at least shaking enough to be really noticeable. they're not so sure about the intimidation aspect, though.

As it turned out, despite how kasper thaler might feel in the moment, they had picked a very bad target.[break][break]

Calliope paused as she watched the burning corpse of a jeep crackling and burning before her. The people inside had stopped screaming a while ago. Now, it only served to fuel to rage as she watched it crackle.[break][break]

When Calliope turned to face Kasper, Kasper might hear boss music start to play.[break][break]

A plain, regular pokeball is tossed out, flying straight and true despite Calliope's missing eye. She didn't even bother to answer the Rocket scum, only narrowing her one eye with killing intent. The Dragonite that is called out roars in anger before charging headfirst for Kasper and their pokemon. Fists light up and crackle, dancing with a Thunder Punch aimed for the duo.

skirmish: kasper vs calliope

the first thought kasper has is wondering why the hell they hear boss music when the stranger turns. the second is a horrble, sinking realization of oh fuck is that who i think it is that settles firmly in their bones. they need to leave, they think. and now, probably.

they had heard about the champion of kanto, and how she had been assumed to die in the takeover. but they were pretty sure she was here, either in the flesh or as some sort of weird grim reaper before whatever actually killed them, and they weren't sure what was worse.
[break][break]
she doesn't answer, but the dragonite she releases is very much real and also heading for them. "oh fuck!" any attempt at seeming cool and intimidating is promptly abandoned as they make a dive for their sylveon, knocking the pink pokemon aside and skinning their knees pretty severely in the process.

but they're alive. and not electrocuted, even if they can feel air almost crackling just above their head. blindly, they fumble for yarrow's pokeball, withdrawing the sylveon and releasing bluebell without even thinking about it too hard. the plain pokeball rests in their hand even after the shadow lycanroc is free- something that would have been comforting had their heart not been pounding so hard they're sure they could hear it.

bluebell doesn't have the same reservations, apparently- before kasper can even really think past the panic, the shadow lycanroc is lunging towards the dragonite in an attempt to crunch down on anything he can find.

The Sylveon falls. The Dragonite doesn't allow kasper thaler too much leeway. There's only just enough time for the Lycanroc to materialize before the Dragonite is whipping around, tail twisting around her, so she can try and slam a Wing Attack against the other.[break][break]

Instead of taking off Kasper's head, it meets the Lycanroc's jaws. Blood wells up from under scales where teeth pierce, yet the Dragonite keeps pushing.[break][break]

Callie picks her way over the corpses, picking her way closer through the field between them. A knife shines in her hands, blade thirsty. The intention is clear:[break][break]

If the Dragonite didn't finish Kasper, Callie would do it with her own hands.

skirmish: kasper vs calliope

the sting that comes with kasper's scraped skin is barely noticeable through the adrenaline- or panic- or whatever it is that they're feeling. before they can process it all, the dragonite is whipping around with a wing attack, and for a second kasper is certain that's where they die. that there will be no fanfare, that nobody will find them until it's much too late-

the blow never comes- at least not in the way they're expecting. bluebell's jaws are latched onto the dragonite's wing, and he pushes back with a rumbling noise that, in any other situation, may have been a growl as he tries to bite down harder on the part of the wing he's met with. kasper is sure it's about as much to protect them as the dragonite would want to be their friend, but it gives them an opportunity to stand up.

there's some memory of pain that serves as a reminder that half of their side is going to be bright purple from bruises, but, in the moment, they can't feel too much regret about that. not when the former champion of kanto starts picking her way across the field with a telltale gleam of silver in her hand, and not when the only thing that had stopped them from meeting a worse end had been the jaws of their pokemon.

and especially not when, right now, they were essentially on their own.
